Michael Komara began fly fishing in 2008, and entered the competitive fishing world in 2014. He was a member of the U.S. Youth Fly Fishing Team from 2016 to 2018, and was the team captain in 2019. He competed in three Youth World Fly Fishing Championships in Slovenia (2017, Bronze), Poland (2018), and the Czech Republic (2019, Silver, Indv. 4th). Since then he has continued competing for Fly Fishing Team USA on the adult circuit, most recently earning a team bronze medal at the 43rd World Fly Fishing Championships in France.
Outside of competitive fishing, Micheal has targeted and caught nearly one hundred species on the fly across twenty states and eight countries. The challenge of figuring out how to catch a new type of fish or navigate fishing in a foreign place is what gets him out of bed in the morning. He has been fortunate to spend most of his life learning from best anglers and coaches in the sport, and has picked up new and innovative tactics from all over the world to catch fish in even the toughest conditions.
Michael is now based in Carlisle, Pennsylvania and works as a research and development chemist in the polymer industry. In his free time he loves to share what he has learned about his sport through guiding and writing. Though he is a die-hard competitor, he enjoys all aspects of the sport and loves everything about being on the water. Whether you want to learn how to catch as many fish as possible, target a new species, or just have a relaxing day on the water, a day fishing with Mike will be one you won’t forget.
